Western States Cutlery Company: History

Sheffield trained Charles W. Platts started C.W. Platts and Sons in 1896 and produced knives in New York until his son, Harvey Nixon Platts took the business over in 1900.

Harvey moved the business to Boulder CO and changed the name to Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing Company.

Western States Cutlery first started producing pocketknives in 1920 and were the first to do so in the American West.

In 1928 they started making hunting knives. and continued producing them throughout their existence.

The company changed names two more times, to Western Cutlery Company and then to Coleman-Western.

The most valuable of their knives are of Pre WWII vintage.
